The Force and The Faith
June 29, 2005 10:15:55 AM

Everyone has heard of Star Wars and "the Force." On Star Wars, the Force is what gives all the Jedi their special powers. For example (spoilers ahead!!) in "A New Hope" when the Rebel flight team is trying to drop proton bombs down a shaft to destroy the Death Star, and one pilot fails, Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice says to Luke, "Use the Force Luke!" and Luke's able to release the bombs at the right time so they go down the shaft.

Basically, the Force is a faith in the mysterious unknown. When great Jedi knights...umm...expire (hey it was the best word I could think of!), their souls go on to be part of the Force and help younger Jedi. The idea of the Force uses some basic Christian faiths, which brings me to the Faith part of this.

The Faith is what you recieve when you come to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Jesus died for you so you might have life if you'll only accept His gift of salvation. Now when you have faith in Jesus, you are able to do things you weren't able to do before. For example (I saw this on the 700 Club), this man was an extreme alcoholic, and his life was just completely ruined. He asked Jesus into his life, and he soundly defeated his addiction to alcohol. Of course, the Faith doesn't provide you with amazing powers to move rocks with your mind or whatever, even though the Bible does say in Mark 11:23, "For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith."

There is a difference between the Force and the Faith. For one, the Force doesn't provide a meaning for life. It doesn't even provide a real hope for afterlife. The Faith does. When you take Jesus as your Lord and Master, you can know God's ultimate plan for your life, and you are never living in confusion. With the Faith, you also have assurance that when you die you will go to Heaven. Another difference is that the Force is something made up to go with a movie. The Faith is not. God has been real since before the beginning of time, and the Force has only been around since 1977. The Force is fiction, not truth.

Here's my stand. Star Wars is a great movie, fun to watch, fun to enjoy. It's fun to see the Jedi do their things using the Force, but I always remind myself "You know, that rock got moved with a piece of clear string." Although it's fun to say "Gee I wish I had mind powers," it's much more fun to say "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I like knowing where my life is going. Just remember. There IS a differnece between the Force and the Faith. Don't get them confused.
